The ultraviolet rays are so strong that they degrade DNA and protein in the skin. 3% -5% of the UV radiation which strikes the ground are so-called UVB rays. These rays are the ones that causes sunburn. The rest is UVA rays, which until a few years ago was considered harmless because they did not cause sunburn – but suntan.
However, we have now seen that UVA rays absolutely are just as harmful as UVB rays because a tan is simply the skin’s attempt to defend itself. When the skin is stimulated by solar radiation, deliver melanocytes (cells that is located in the lower layers of the skin and produce melanin) melanin which is capable of absorbing UV rays and blocks them before the harmful rays penetrates the different layers of the skin.

Erythema (from the Greek erythros, meaning red) is redness of the skin.
Sun filters were created to protect the damage caused by radiation levels. These must not exceed the MED, the minimun dose causing erythema (Minimal Erytherma Dose). If the MED is not exceeded, the body can slowly proceed to synthesize the pigments that guarantee its correct protection.
Sun filters are therefore chemical or physical substances, specifically formulated with molecules that can absorb radiation and then release it in the form of heat, preventing the skin from remaining in direct contact with the sun’s rays.
These filters thus have to be very stable, non-irritating and must be effective with all types of UV radiation and have high absorption value. The absorption value determines the screening power of the filters.
The S.P.F. protection factor (COLIPA scale) is identified by calculating the ratio between the minimal erytherma dose of the skin protected by the sun filters and the minimum erytherma dose of the unprotected skin. The time of exposure to the sun is also important and strictly correlated. The ration between the two times of exposure give a mathematical calculation of the protection factor.
