Cassia senna

Cassia senna, or senna, belongs to the large genus of flowering plants in the legume family Fabaceae. Cassia senna grows natively in semi-desert scrub of tropical regions of Africa.

Leaves and pods of Cassia senna have been used as a laxative and purgative since ancient times. There are several evidence supporting the use of senna for the treatment of chronic constipation. The active ingredients of senna leaves (several glycosides) interact with immune cells in the colon. Senna leaves also serves as a fungicide.
