Artichoke

Cynara scolymusArtichoke (lat. Cynara cardunculus)  is a variety of a species of thistle traditionally cultivated as a food and for medical purposes. The edible part of the plant consists of the flower buds before the flowers come into bloom.

Artichoke leaf extract is mostly used in the dietary supplements. Cynarine is a chemical constituent in Cynara. The majority of the cynarine found in artichoke is located in the pulp of the leaves. Cynarine and other artichoke’s chemicals may reduce vomiting, spasms, and intestinal gas. These chemicals have also been shown to lower cholesterol and protect the liver.  Artichoke leaf extract has been traditionally used for treating snakebites, preventing gallstones, to increase urine flow, and as a tonic or stimulant.

Artichoke leaves extracts and seeds oils are also used in the cosmetic products.
